Stress is a natural part of life and can’t be avoided, although excess amounts of stress are known to have a detrimental impact on health and wellbeing. A study in 2018 showed that 74% of adults in the UK felt ‘overwhelmed or unable to cope’ at some point in the past year.

This goes to show how important it is to allow people to feel like it’s okay to talk more openly about their stress and what makes them stressed so they can get the support they need to overcome it.

Here are four easily-applicable stress-busting methods to deal with a busy life:

1. Meditation Can Help Relieve Stress

Mindfulness techniques such as meditation are known widely to have a calming effect on people’s lives allowing them to deal with negative feelings and emotions in a better way. And it’s not just those who practise it who say this, but science also has backed up their claims.

Studies have shown that meditation allows people to expand their self-awareness, increase imagination and creativity, gain new perspectives on stressful situations and even lower blood pressure.

2. Connect And Talk About Your Problems With Others

Talking through your problems will take a huge weight off your shoulders and the same goes for if you’re feeling overwhelmed by stress. Studies have shown that by simply talking about your problems it makes us feel more understood, at ease and accepted in our environment.

Talk to your partner, friends, relatives, parents or anybody who you feel comfortable sharing your experiences with. They may also feel the same way which means you can support each other through challenges.

3. Write About Your Experiences

Getting your thoughts, feelings and emotions down on paper can allow you to gain a greater perspective and understanding for why you feel the way you do. The psychologist James Pennebaker discovered that confessing your emotions through writing does wonders for the body.

Whenever you feel overwhelmed with stress, set aside 15 to 20 minutes and start writing down your thoughts and feelings at that moment. This can help you to release those feelings and to process them more easily allowing you to gain a greater perspective and to move through the challenges you face.

4. Set Aside Time For Hobbies

It’s important to set aside time for relaxation and hobbies. Not only does this give you some time out but it also gives you time to focus your mind on something you enjoy. For example you could play golf or you could have a family game of Monopoly (as long as no one cheats!)

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that although stress is a natural part of life, there are far too many people in our society feeling overwhelmed with stress and unable to cope. It’s important to allow these people to understand that it’s okay for them to talk about their stress and for them to understand the easy ways they can begin feeling better immediately.
